Why Tank Gauging?

Tank Gauging is essential to determine the inventory of liquid bulk storage tanks.
The following types of operation can be categorised:
nInventory Control
nCustody Transfer
nOil Movement & Operations
nLeak Control & Reconciliation

 Inventory Control

nImportant ‘management tool’ for any refinery, terminal and storage company. (How rich are we today?)

nCan be based on volume and/or Mass

nIn-plant accuracy requirements are less critical with independent storage companies and terminals. Reliability and repeatability are much more important.

 Custody Transfer

Measurement of product transfer between ship and shore and/or shore and pipeline transmission systems.(Batch dependant).

nUse as verification tool for Flow meters.

nWhere Custody Transfer or assessment of taxes, duties or royalties are involved, the complete system must be officially approved and certified.

  Oil Movement & Operations

nMeasurement and repeatability are more important than the absolute accuracy

nRequires compatibility with control and management systems, such as PLC, SCADA and DCS systems.nSystem must be flexible due to integration of field instruments

 Leak Control & Reconciliation

nIncreased awareness of the environmental impact of the industry nPrograms are initiated to reduce the risk of damage of the environment

nMore accurate information is generated for reconciliation, using the latest technology

 Requirements Automatic Tank Gauging

nAn Automatic Tank Gauging System should provide the following information:

nDetailed and up-to-date measured data (Level, temperature,  water, Density)
nSynchronous Inventory data (T.O.V., G.O.V., G.S.V., S&W, Mass and N.S.V.)
nReports (detailed and grouped data)
nAlarms (Real-time & historical)
nTrending
nSimple, non confusing GUI, adapted to local site
